“The Grateful Dead concert at Winterland was February 23, 1974. Lighting inside was not too good, so I push processed Tri-X film. Winterland had its own unique smell - among other things, cigarette smoking was still legal indoors. Upstairs you could walk around a balcony behind the stage which was a unique view. On this night, Bill Graham came out and said ‘Ladies and Gentleman, Please welcome the great, great, great, Grateful Dead.’
“Near the end of the performance, or maybe even the encore, just when the Dead started singing the line ‘The sun’s gonna shine in my back door some day,’ a mirror ball that had been dark and unseen until then suddenly lit up. Winterland was bathed with swirling, dazzling lights.”
